Embracing change with open arms

As my first year of university ends, I find myself reminiscing on the past year of my student life. Both inside the classroom and out. As I reflect upon my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the positive impact that change has had on my life. Each twist, turn, and moment of uncertainty propelled me forward, enabling personal transformation and leading me to newfound joy and fulfilment. In this blog, I share my story of embracing change and highlight how it has become a powerful force for positivity in my life.

A small fact about me is I am a first-year repeat. I began University in September 2021, studying a course that wasn't right for me. As I embarked on this new journey in September 2022, I hoped this time would be different. My prediction was highly accurate. Each change pushed me to adapt, learn, and evolve from switching courses to moving into a second-year home with my best friends. I embraced new skills, perspectives, and relationships, and in doing so, I discovered hidden strengths within myself that I never knew existed. And I am proud of myself for taking that leap to start again.

I have always been a person afraid of change, don't get me wrong, I still am. However, my past academic year, compared to my last, has shaped my definition of change in the best way possible.

Change has encouraged me to shed outdated beliefs and embrace new perspectives. By challenging the status quo, change has opened doors to endless possibilities and expanded my horizons. It has allowed me to explore my passions, pursue unconventional paths, and redefine success on my terms. Change has shown me that our only limits are the ones we impose upon ourselves. I have experienced a profound sense of personal freedom and empowerment by breaking free from those boundaries. I have discovered a love for writing and pursuing a life in the media industry. I would never have been open to the opportunities that have arisen for me this past year if I stayed safe and continued my original degree.

Change has taught me that there is never one clear path, that life will plan out the way it is supposed to, and to take every opportunity that comes my way with open arms.

The joy my course has brought to my life has brightened my attitude and outlook and allowed me to enjoy the social side of being a student to the max, primarily because of the absence of stress and my genuine enjoyment of my degree. The lack of stress has allowed me to fully immerse myself into spending time with my friends, enjoying the freedom of looking after myself in a different city, and experiencing all the adventures being a student has to offer. Maintaining a balanced approach to academics and personal well-being has created an environment where learning becomes a source of excitement rather than pressure.

By embracing a positive mindset and prioritising my mental and emotional well-being, I have unlocked the true essence of a joyful student experience, one that is characterised by personal growth, intellectual curiosity, and a profound sense of contentment.

In retrospect, I am grateful for the positive impact of change on my life. Embracing change has empowered me to navigate life's uncertainties with courage and optimism. As we continue our unique journeys, let us recognise change not as a force to be feared but as an invitation to embrace transformation and unlock the extraordinary potential within us.
