Learning to accept your Psoriasis

Living with a chronic skin condition like psoriasis can be physically and emotionally challenging. The persistent and often unpredictable nature of psoriasis affects various aspects of my life, from my self-esteem and body image to social interactions and overall well-being. However, from me to you, we have to learn to accept our psoriasis. It is an essential step towards embracing self-acceptance and taking back our empowerment.

It's crucial to remember that your condition does not define you. You are unique, with incredible strengths, talents, and qualities far beyond your skin. Accepting your psoriasis is about shifting your mindset and embracing a more compassionate and self-loving perspective. I have struggled with this. For me, I went 18 years of my life with not a single plaque on my body. To be ambushed with my whole body covered in patches was a lot to digest. Don't get me wrong, I am still battling with the shame and embarrassment of my spots, and I can't imagine it will ultimately go any time soon. However, I have made a conscious effort to shift my mindset and recently began accepting my body for what it has become. I have started to remind myself that people aren't focusing on my appearance and it is all in my head.

If I want to wear a vest top on a day my skin is flaring up, do it. It's my body, and everyone has their insecurities that they are battling with.

Acceptance is a process that varies from person to person. It is not an overnight transformation but a gradual journey that involves self-reflection, self-compassion, and self-empowerment. Here are some critical steps that I believe can help us along this transformative path:

1. Educate Yourself: Understanding psoriasis, its triggers, and treatment options can bring us hope and allow informed decisions to be made. This knowledge can be the key to managing psoriasis effectively.

2. Ask for help and support: One way of doing so could be connecting with others living with psoriasis. Hearing other people battling the same war as you can be incredibly healing. However, the support of your loved ones will be the best healer.

3. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that having psoriasis does not diminish your worth as a person. Cultivating self-compassion fosters a positive mindset and strengthens your resilience. Writing about my condition and educating others has allowed me to continue my journey of acceptance.

4. This further leads me to the next point - Communicate Openly: Educate your friends, family, and loved ones about psoriasis. Sharing information about your condition can foster understanding, empathy, and support. Having a solid support system around you is the best form of self-care.

5. Focus on What You Can Control: While you cannot control the presence of psoriasis, you can take charge of managing it effectively. Adopt a healthy lifestyle by incorporating stress management techniques, moisturising daily, regular exercise, less alcohol intake (as this is a strong reason for psoriasis flare-ups), and a balanced diet.

Acceptance is an ongoing journey but can become easier with the right mindset and knowledge. By embracing your individuality, you can cultivate a positive attitude and live life to the fullest.
